'Climatically under the stars'
The aim of the project is to popularize among students and doctoral students pro-environmental behavior in protecting the night environment from artificial light pollution.
Participants of the project: students and doctoral students of universities. Participation in the project activities is free of charge.
The place of implementation of the project is: the city of Rzeszow, the Starry Sky Park Bieszczady, as well as Niepołomice and its surroundings.
Project leader: Association for Innovation and Technology Transfer "Horizons" from Rzeszow.
The project “Climatically Under the Stars ” is implemented with a grant from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
Project implementation date: from July 2024 to November 2024.
The project site was the city of Rzeszów.
Key project activities
I. Student workshops under the dark sky (August).
-Practical workshops on documenting pollution by artificial light-night dark sky photography
-Lectures on “Light pollution and its impact on people and the environment.”
II. Astro weekend with stars and nature (October)
-Study visit to the astronomical observatory at Lubomir (Węglówka, Wiśniowa commune) and/or the Astronomical Observatory of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, at Fort Skała.
-Thematic activities: Study of climate change and the effects of these changes on Earth on the basis of satellite images, use of databases (images from EARTHCAM, Copernicus satellite, Sentinel). Use of electromagnetic waves other than visible to document climate change and artificial light pollution (infrared).
-Hands-on activities: Daytime photography and photography of the Sun, good examples of nature and climate protection in the vicinity of Niepołomice, night photography, including the use of telescopes,
- Photo sessions - day and night photography.
III. Creative workshops (September)
-Workshops: Student activities to minimize the effects of light pollution.
-Workshops on designing T-shirts to promote dark sky protection.
-Hands-on activities: Testing applications to help monitor and reduce artificial light pollution, using the example of a selected area of the Bieszczady Star Sky Park and the neighborhoods where the workshop participants live
IV. Photo contest “To see the stars again”.
V. Photo book summarizing the activities of the project.
