Carpathian Starry Sky project
Project partners:
The leader of the project was the Ukrainian association Institute of Development of Carpathian Region from Uzhgorod. The Polish partner of the project was the Association for Innovation and Technology Transfer "Horizons".
Project implementation period:
12 months, December of 2020 – November of 2021.
Overall objective of the project
The project aim is to preserve and promote the Carpathian starry sky as a natural heritage of the Polish and Ukrainian border regions and strengthening cooperation between both regions.
Specific objectives
1. Preservation of natural starry sky heritage and environmental education on light pollution.
2. Stimulation of cooperation between Polish and Ukrainian institutions in the field of light pollution protection.
3. Joint promotion of starry sky natural heritage and its use for development of educational and touristic products.
Main project activities
1. Research on natural heritage objects and night sky quality in the Dark Sky Parks.
2. Preparation of the common strategy "Nature- and astrotourism tourism development in cross-border area of Poland and Ukraine".
3. Creation of new educational tourist route in Transcarpathian Dark-Sky Park.
4. Training for Ukrainian astroeducators.
5. Organization of events to promote natural heritage and astro-tourism.
6. Project promotion and communication.
Key results of the project:
1. Conducting field research and developing an audit of light pollution on the territory of the Bieszczady Starry Sky Park and Zakarpattya Dark Sky Park, and preparing studies on astro-tourism and nature tourism on the territories of these parks.
2. Development of a cross-border strategy for the development of astrotourism. (PLversion, UA version)
3. Development and marking of a nature trail related to astronomy and the problem of light pollution on the territory of the Transcarpathian Dark Sky Park and training for astro-guides.
4. Astronomical demonstrations for the public.
5. Publications and films:
- A movie about the Bieszczady Starry Sky Park, (EN version, UA version).
- A movie about Zakarpattia Dark Sky Park,(EN version, UA version).
- Photo book showing project activities (PDF- 17 MB),
- E-guide to the Carpathian Dark Sky Park - PL version (PDF- 20 MB), UA version (PDF - 25MB), EN version (PDF 27 MB).
6. Promotion of our parks:
- Organized study visit (promotour) to both parks.
- Published materials in the media.
- Organized astronomy photography contest for young people.
- Started the process of registering the parks with the International Dark Sky Association.
